Final Thoughts on Service Learning Experience!

Throughout my three and a half months stay in London, I have done several service learning events. They are Thames 21, In-Deep Community Task Force, Korean Cultural Centre, and London Air Ambulance at Earl’s Court. Out of all the service events, I enjoyed volunteering at the In-Deep Community centre the most because it mainly involved talking to people which I like!

When I was first assigned to do thirty hours of community service in August, it felt like November will never come. But now it’s already the second week of November, and I’m almost done with my service hours only three hours remaining. I’m glad that I got the opportunity to volunteer during my stay in London. I can proudly look back and talk about my London service events in the future.

My service learning events gave me a chance to become open to people, share my thoughts and be part of the community of London. I was able to grow up as a mature volunteer who has had service experiences in London throughout several organizations.

I’ve learned to give my time to a particular community in order to make a difference and take part in. I hope the service learning experiences will help in the future so that I can continue with the big mind of volunteering at Northeastern when I go there in January.

Byeee London! I’ll miss you!! [Re-entries, thoughts, concerns, and excitments]

I can’t believe my stay in London is already over! It feels like I just moved into Metrogate House few weeks ago not knowing anyone, anywhere and anything.  Now I am so familiar with everything around in London, especially around Kensington I know where to go for awesome pizzas, hot chocolate, clothing and grocery shopping. It’s really sad that I need to move on now to Boston and leave London. On November 29th, my last day in London, also my birthday, I will be flying to Paris and stay there for little bit and go back to Korea for Christmas. I’m really looking forward to my Paris and Korea trip but at the same time, I will really really miss London. I can’t believe it’s about the time when everyone needs to say good bye and pack our suitcases. Even thought this may be a final farewell with London, I’m happy that I get to see everyone (NUin students) back in Boston. I’m thrilled to go to Boston because I’ve never been there and Boston would be my new home for at least next four years. The last week of November, I think I will try to look around London more because there are things that I wouldn’t want to miss before I want to go. So far, I’m planning to go to the Leeds Castle, Cotswolds, Isle of Wight, Tour of London, Cambridge and Wales & Wye Valley.

My 3 1/2 months stay in London was an awesome experience. I’m glad that I got the opportunity to visit here while everyone else directly go to the states for university. It is one of the best memories in my life meeting nice new people from Northeastern, visiting places such as Amsterdam, Barcelona and Edinburgh, and shopping at topshop haha

I just hope that in the future, I will have another opportunity to visit London. If I do so, then I would want to visit to places I’ve been this year and think back about my precious memories in London from 2009.

Exercise 10.4 : Being the Change

I believe that the simplest thing people can change is poverty in Africa. People don’t realize how much of their waste from dinner table can feed numbers of children and adults in Africa. People may think that Africa should be remained as poor because the country is not developed and will be in the future and therefore they deservce to be starved. It will make a big difference if every one of us donate food and money to Africa. Not everyone is aware of this. They expect the charity organizations and schools to do this, they don’t even donate a penny. This would also decrease the death rate in Africa.

It may cost little bit to help the poverty in Africa but money is not the problem. Not everyone will be willing to help out and it’s not like one day people in Africa wake up and they will be given three meals a day. Helping and changing one country to become into a standard level of finance is going to take time. However, when everyone starts taking part in helping, one day, there will be a change in Africa.

This service learning has helped me to open my eyes into different views. I’ve learned about putting my time, efforts and skills in to volunteerings and group work. When I go back to Northeastern, I would like to be involved with other service learning experiences so that I can continue discovering myself and benefiting others.

Global Citizen

Global citizenship is a new concept term that has been risen in the 21st century. Every single one of us are global citizens because we rely on different people, countries, and languages, and cultures from all over the world for our knowledge, living and technology.People need to be more aware of being global citizens because whatever we do, we constantly affect and get affected by what people on the other side of the earth are doing.

My 3 1/2 months stay in London has changed the way I view the world around me. Prior to studying at FIE, I went to an international school where students from all around the world come and take classes in English.
At FIE, 90% of students are from the United States. However, some of their ethnic backgrounds are different.

After talking with students about their experiences with volunteering, studying in US or other countries, learning other languages, anfd after much of experience of travelling, I began to be more interested in the term ‘global’. Studying abroad, particularily in london has made me feel like a global citizen.

Taking an advantage of studying abroad in London and attending International high school, I would like to connect and commit to the world as a whole.

Privileges and Identities

It’s been a huge privilege for me to have many opportunities to volunteer in London. I’ve been enjoying searching and volunteer events for the past two months. There were a lot of events that interested in me, so I signed up for a couple of them. Some events I’ve participated in are Thames 21, In-Deep Centre, and Korean Cultural Centre. I’m glad that I got the chance to volunteer in London because I can contribute not only in Korea but also my study abroad area, in London. This is a really encouraging thing because it means I can make a difference wherever I am. At first, I thought having to do 30 hours of volunteering service was pointless and irritating but after all, I realized that this is a great experience for everyone, especially for myself and other students in Nuin because we got to contribute to a community that we would never had a chance to. Participating in service in London has helped me become more open person, who is aware of communities around me, and know how to make a difference.

When I do project or service, I think I’m more a participant in a certain group. I was never a leader because I just like doing whatever others are doing and follow them. In the next several services that I would be getting involved with, I want to be the leader and be a bigger part in that service.

Crime in Britain

I wasn’t that surprised when we learned about crime in the UK in the class. Now that the world is becoming more involved with crimes, I just assumed UK would be one of them too. Because I live in such a wealthy part of London, I’m not really aware of all the crimes going on in London. I think I am forgetting that other areas of London are just like Kensington, no violence, and no crime. I should be more aware of the crime issues going on in London (at least during my stay) and perhaps get involved with crime reduction organization and help out how I can make a difference.

Exercise 9.6 and Changing Perspectives of London Service

Exercise 9.6 Community Evaluation of Service-Learning

Last Friday, I had an opportunity to volunteer at the Korean Cultural Centre (KCC) in London. KCC is a place for people who are interested in Korea culture, including films, language and art. While searching for volunteering events, I thought it would be exciting to get involved with any events that relate to Korea. So, I did find one event that was held at KCC with Korean artists, which hosted a great performance including numbers of traditional instrument and music. My job was to help out set up the stage, serve at the reception, clean up and do any small chores.

I was able to meet several Korean artists. I talked to few of them, how they started performing arts/music, and what made them to choose London for their performances. Because I was helping out at the main floor, I wasn’t able to see any of the actual performances except at rehearsals. E performances included traditional shamanistic dance, a composition for Kayageum, a twelve-stringed Korean harp. Also it included solo daegum (a bamboo flute) music, and exhibition of art pieces from a sculptor, glass artist, painter and textile artist. I was never fascinated by Korean traditional arts/music because I thought the traditional ones are usually boring and classic. However, after watching all the performances and exhibition, I realized how beautiful and appreciated Korean fine arts were.

The only difficulty I had was some staff members and the artists made me do so many little chores which got a bit annoying at the end. I had to run to Tesco and Ryman’s stationary store constantly every time they needed something. But then I soon realized that this is the reason why I came to this event- to help out. So I stopped with the annoying thoughts but began focusing on my duty.

College should prepare students by teaching them how to communicate with others and how to be ready to meet new people. Because volunteering is not just about helping and serving, but also involves meeting new people, and introducing yourself, students must get ready for this.

I would describe this experience to another student as new and engaging because I was able to gain more knowledge about certain culture and meet new people from different parts of fine arts.

Changing Perspectives of experience/ London Service

After getting involved with several services in London, my perspective has change a little. I learned that there are so many services we can get involved in London. The volunteering that I’ve done so far taught me to become a bigger person as in not in size but in knowledge. I was able to meet and talk to a lot of people, learn about certain organizations and charities, and be more aware of service as a whole. At first, I thought volunteering in London was just about getting my hours done, but after spending two months year, I realized that I was actually contributing to these societies and building my experiences. After my volunteering experience is over in London, I would like to expand my service in Northeastern by getting involved with so that I can put my actions from London. Even though I haven’t completed half of my hours (30), I am glad I am putting my time into services because it makes me realize how important my role as a volunteer and that people need me as a supporter.

Zone 1

My service learning site hasn’t been outside of zone 1 but I’ve learned that wherever I go, places are very different from where I live, Kensington. Because I live in such a nice neighborhood, I keep forgetting that rest of London is not like Kensington.

My last service learning site was held in South Westminster, and this area was different from Kensington. When I arrived, I was able to tell the neighborhood was different because it wasn’t nice as Kensington, and people who passed by were not all British. I was able to tell this area was less wealthy than Kensington. Even though the neighborhood was not familiar at all, compared to Kensington, the people were really nice and friendly

Exercise 8.4

Open minded

Not judgmental

Unbiased

Friendly

Understanding

Interest people (family, environment and individuals)

Communication

Since I’m a psychology major, my skills can approach to people by understanding them, particularly their backgrounds such as ethnics or illness. For example, my latest service experience was at In Deep community centre. A lot of mentally illness people come here for lunch events, and with my psychology skills, I shouldn’t be judging them by their abnormal behaviors, or less friendly because they are ill. With people who have hard time living normal like others, I would need to communicate well with them in order to find out what and how I can help them better. In the future, I would like to expand my skills for psychology through service learning experiences.

Insider Description of the Site

Last weekend, I volunteered at In-Deep Community which was a very motivating service. This community is a place where elders who don’t have family or with illness such as autism or schizophrenia come and eat lunch and offers friendship.  I was really worried that I wouldn’t arrive on time because it was my first time looking for the place. I actually arrived at 10:45 which was great because I was able to hear some specific explanations about the community from Emma, who is the general manager of the community. Soon after, few other volunteers arrived, with their In-Deep t-shirt on (which I finally got one!) After other volunteers and I introduced ourselves, we set the tables.  My duty for today’s service was to serve food to the elders, talk and get to know them, and to clean up.

It was really interesting get to knowing people. Not only I talked to the other volunteers but also I tried talking a lot to the elders. They were really nice, and one of the women who has a mental illness kept repeating and remembering my name because she told me her best friend’s daughter’s name was Hanna too. She hugged me every time I passed by, and introduced me to her husband who was also ill. Many elders who came to eat at the In Task community were mentally ill as Emma had told, but they acted as if they were normal. It was really hard to tell that some of them were autistic.

I liked this particular service because I think it would help me with my major (psychology) a lot. I was probably the youngest volunteer, and others were all workers. It seemed like they have participated in In-Deep Community before, because they seemed familiar with the elders’ names and backgrounds. They were interested that I was from a university in the states and how I came to London for a 4 months study-abroad program. I told them I’m enjoying my stay in London so much and I would love to explore other areas.

I would love to continue my service at In Task community because I think I can be a big help for them even by washing dishes and socializing with elders and also it’s a big accomplishment for me serving others.

Exercise 7.4

Few days ago, my service learning project was held at In-Deep Community. I’ve experienced a roadblock which was getting lost on the way to the community centre. It was really difficult for me because I get lost often when I’m alone, and even though I brought my map with me, I still couldn’t find a way to the centre.

Describe: Before I got on the tube, I was so sure that I would find this place because Emma, the general manager had told me the centre was near Pimlico tube station. I easily figured out how to get to Pimlico station. However the problem was how to get to the centre from the tube station. I was worried and nervous that I would never find my way. I’ve asked several people if they know where the centre was, but no one had idea.

Understand: While I was lost, I regretted that I didn’t ask Emma the detailed direction. After 20 minutes of wandering around, I ended up getting on a cab, which was expensive but helped me arrive at the centre on time.

Encourage Communication: Next time I go, I want to try not getting on the cabs but looking for the place. I will make sure I leave early and talk to Emma about the directions, so that even if I get lost, I wouldn’t be anxious about not arriving on time. It would’ve been helpful if Emma had told me that the centre was not located “near” the tube station, but just tell me the exact direction of the place.

Even though I got lost on the way, I think it is okay because it was my first time visiting the place. Also, getting lost was worthwhile because I would’ve regretted if I gave up and went home, because it was such an exciting service experience!
