BTCV - “Richmond” (Remix featuring Hedges and Woodchips)
Early morning volunteer opportunities aren’t intriguing to anyone, to say the least. Early morning volunteer opportunities in a place you’re not familiar with, is even less intriguing. However those two factors didn’t stop the 13 of us from taking an interesting journey to Richmond to complete the volunteer opportunity. All of us left early on Sunday morning to take the District line westbound to Richmond. We then took the Overground for a stop and got off. We had no idea where to go as the directions given to Hayley weren’t clear, but eventually through trial and error, we found our way to the meeting point. We were supposed to look for a gray minibus, but found nothing. After a phone call and a few minutes of waiting, the minibus arrived and took us to the linear park we did our service in.
We were the only group there, along with the supervisor and a woman. The day started out with a short orientation about what we had to do. The things we had to do for the whole day was simple: get rid of grass around plants and add woodchips on top of it. There was a lot of plants to do, but with 13 of us working, it was finished rather quickly. Other went to get woodchips and bring it to the others clearing the plants, but that too was getting finished quickly. In order to spread the work out, the supervisor gives us an extended tea break for lunch. After that we went back to work and repeating the work with did in the morning. The last activity we did involved getting water from a nearby water source and watering all the plants that had woodchips in it including trees we preserved.
After the event, we gather all the material and left. Our supervisor was nice enough to drive us around Richmond showing us landmarks around town. After a quick tour, he dropped us off at the tube station before we came back home. The event was a joy as the weather was very nice and the work we did wasn’t extremely tiring. We all enjoyed and it was fun doing the activity with other NU kids. The supervisor was happy with our work and he was happy to see us, which was satisfying. Overall the day was great all around and if I was given the opportunity to do it again, I definitely would.
