Final Thoughts of Service Learning Experience

Okay, this is finally the end of the semester. Past 3 and half months (or 3 months for me because i came here late), I have done 30 hours of community services. The word came up to my mind was “Bullshit” when I heard that we have to spend 30 hours for community services at the beginning and I had to force myself to do the services. Nevertheless, my final thoughts of doing services has changed through the 30 hours. Through the services, i have met lots of people and learned how we can use the service for myself somehow. After i realize it, i started looking for services can be a help for my major. Since my major is digital art (photograph), i have done the services that i can take photos such as Cancer Research UK that is for cheering people in a marathon and Mouth Cancer 10km Walk. I could take bunch of photos (by the way I have took about a thousand pictures during this semester including everything.), and understand photography more even though i may or may not gain the skills of photography. I have realized what photographs wants me to do in order to take photos. Just pressing the shutter button is not enough but i have to communicate when i’m taking pictures of people. It was really worthy and i am now glad that i have done the 30 hours services and appreciate this opportunity.

Is it heaven or hell waiting for me at Northeastern??

I cannot believe that we are finishing this NUin program in 2 weeks. It was really great to be a part of these amazing members and studying in the same courses with them. 2 more weeks to go. But I worry about adjusting to the new environment again. Since I am not good at talking to people and the English the language itself, I worry if I could make friends like I did here. Also, another TOEFL is waiting for me back in Japan after this to study in the mainstream at Northeastern. I honestly do not have a confidence to get the score Northeastern wants me to have. But if I pass it, I am sure that the life at Northeastern will be amazing as heaven. If I don’t it would be still great but it could be also hell at the same time because I am sick of being in ESL though I am just stupid enough to be in it. Still, I am highly excited to join a college and study my major. I have been seeking for what I want to study and what I want to do in my future and I eventually found it. I do not want to waste my time by being in ESL. I really just want to study my major to be a photographer who is recognized as a professional by everyone else. I am looking forward to join the mainstream of Northeastern.

Exercise 10.4

- When you survey the world (in the form of your family, your neighborhood, your community, your city, your state, your country, or the global community), how would you describe the change you’d like to see in its simplest terms? What change do you wish to see in the world?

Ø What change I would like to see in the world in the simplest terms is globalization for more people. I have encountered to lot of people who have biases, ignorant, indifferences, etc. towards to the people come from other countries or communities. I would like to see it changes or it would keep narrowing people’s views, I think.

- How would this change benefit you and those closest to you? How would it benefit others, and thus contribute to the common good?

Ø It would benefit me and those closest to me to understand each other more. Since the closest people of mine come from everywhere in the world (Japan, United States, Taiwan, Thailand, German, Philippine, etc.), we need to understand not only their personalities but also their culture, lifestyle and other things come from where they were grew up. The change would help us about it a lot.

- What would it cost you and those closest to you to act in ways that might bring about this change? What would the cost be to others not close to you?

Ø The costs for me and those closest to me is that we would possibly know too much things, which could be something you might be not supposed to know, about each other and would have to care about things you know more than right now. And it would be just painful for the others not close to me to know about me and the things around me that much.

- How might you seek to balance the benefits to your work to bring about this change with costs to yourself and others?

Ø Stop complain about things and just stand up and keep going ahead without turning back.

- How has this service-learning experience prepared you to work for this change? What skills and capacities have you developed that will assist you in your work as a change agent? What skills and capacities would you like to develop further?

Ø Since this service-learning experience provides us plenty of chance to encounter lots of people and the services are pretty much diverse, I could see and talk to lot of different kinds of people. And I would like to make myself even more globalized.

- What could you do right now to contribute to this change happening? How might you create shifts in your life such that you might be the change you wish to see in the world in an ongoing committed way?

Ø I would encourage others whom I know and whom does not know how about out side of their places to get interested in globalization or how it is cool to know other kinds of people, culture, lifestyle, etc.

Global Citizen

Global Citizen. This word makes me think if I am a global citizen or not since I lived or live in multiple places in the world. Being a citizen, personally I believe, is being aware of wherever the place you are at and the people around, the community, the culture, etc. So, am I a global citizen? It is true that I have seen things at multiple places with different cultures but I am not aware of them enough. There are too many things I have to do or I have to know to be a global citizen Thus, I cannot say myself a global citizen yet. And being a global citizen is kind of my goal or it could be because global citizen, at least to me, means understanding people, being accepted or adapted by others at wherever the places you go. Once I’m accepted and understand others, I become a global citizen, and that’s the goal for my whole life.

Alcohol Culture in UK vs. US

It is very interesting how UK and US think of drinking alcohol differently. US is more strict about drinking alcohol than UK is, but it seems that UK understands what alcohol is and what it could cause or affect people more than US does. The drinking age in US is 21 and it is 18 in UK and the US law about alcohol is more strict and specific than the law in UK. But by comparing the commercials about alcohol in these countries, the commercial of alcohol from UK shows more reality of troubles which could be caused by alcohol. Also, the commercial itself is simple but interesting, so it can make more awareness what people have to be careful about drinking alcohol. Moreover, people in UK drink alcohol almost everyday and people in the US drink it when they have a party or going out somewhere at nights. So I believe that people in the US cause more trouble by alcohol than UK people. UK people must know appropriated amount to drink because they drink everyday and it’s even sometimes part of their lunch. However, US people seem to drink alcohol to get high.

Privilege/Identity reflection of service learning

I have done five services in London so far. London for London, Air Ambulance, Mouth Cancer Walk for 10km, and two services from Cancer Research UK. But I have no clue what to write about the privilege on this blog because this is already a tremendous privilege to be in a foreign country, London in this case, and join community services. I have, however, discovered myself different that I can now lock on my major clearly like a crystal. I did know what I want to do for my major, photography (digital art) and was making efforts to achieve the goal but I still had a doubt or I was just scared if it was really the one I want to do. Thus I did not put it as my major first and was going to be majoring psychology instead, because I thought psychology would work for anything in the future. Nevertheless, I had numerous opportunities of observing random people and taking photograph of them in the services, and those helped me to reconfirm my goal, becoming a photographer.

Changing Perspective of Experience/ London and Exercise 9.6

Changing Perspective of Experience/ London

Since I came here, nothing has changed but I am getting familiar with things in London. First when I came here, there were lots of culture differences in London. After I started doing community services in London, I had plenty of opportunities to touch with people in London. First service was a mouth cancer walk for 10km, the second one was asking people to donate for 3 London charities, the third one was cheering for people in a half marathon in Hyde Park, and so on. All of those services provided me to see lots of different faces of people too. People who helps others for dead serious, people who were just there to feel himself good, people who were there as students like me, and so on.

Exercise 9.6

1. My name is Kanji Nada from Japan, 18 years old, and majoring Digital Art to be a photographer in the future. Through doing services here in London, my roll is to have more chance to see and touch other people and make my views wider.

2. I have done couple services and believe that I achieved parts of my goal. The part is to see more other people and get my views wider. Since all the services I have done involve large numbers of people, I could get contact with other people.

3. Since I am not a native English speaker, I had some obstacles with talking to people. Also, people here speak with British accents and makes it even harder to understand them sometimes. Sometimes I misunderstood what I was supposed to do so that I had to ask people again and again.

4. So far, I have not achieved my goal, but I have just parts of it.

5. I don’t think I would do differently since it’s been quite great. I will be doing it as same as I was doing so far.

6. They might give students more information of what and how is it to be part of a service, so they would have interests more on it. Also, they could give them not just a few but more various services going on in the future.

7. They might give you more information about the service itself and give pictures or something that people can see what they are actually doing in the service.

8. This is a great opportunity to have this course because I could have chances that I cannot have in normal life. You can touch lots of people, different cultures, it could be relate to your major and would possibly help you to gain your ideas.

Exercise 8.4 “Photography with using the knowledge in Psychology”

Skills/Critical Inquiry Perspectives

Understanding skills

Open mind/Outgoing/Friendly

Communication skills

Photography technique

Knowledge in photography

Knowledge in psychology

Activities community partner needs

Open mind/Outgoing/Friendly

Knowledge in photography

Artistic skills (Setting/Make up/ Lighting/etc)

First of all I should explain my major because it is a bit complicated. The subject I’m taking at Northeastern as my major is psychology. My actual goal is, however, studying photography as a professional. Photography that people usually know is just taking pictures, but photographers’ job could be different in many ways depend on what they take photos of. Idols, people in a city or town, people in wars, objects, some sorts of festivals, school people, etc. In my case, I’m majoring psychology in a college to know more about people in general to take great photos of people by achieving the knowledge of psychology. The knowledge of photography and its techniques are indeed needed. But knowing people is more importantly needed. Thus, I need to be more open mind/outgoing/friendly and so do partner, (he/she doesn’t need to be majoring psychology.) Photographer sometimes needs supports for setting, making up people, etc from others who are in the professional of those. Anyway, the partner or I would be able to have good communicating skills with such skills and can snap the best moments of the people for photography.

Learning Experience Out of Zone 1

The unforgettable experience out of zone 1 in London is when I was participating to a volunteer called London for London. It was because I honestly thought that was the worst community service I have ever taken. It was about each people visit any bar in London, introduce themselves to the manager of the bar, be a door host, and ask people who come in to the bar to donate for three London charities such as Child Company. In my case, the manager was not at the bar in West Brompton where I went to so that I had no one to introduce myself and why and what I was there for. The staff I talked to, he did not even know about the London for London and said they do not allow any other charities doing it. I explained the purpose of the service and all the information I had about the service and the charity itself, and they eventually allowed me to do it, maybe they allowed me because I was getting annoying for them. It pissed me off and it became boring as hell. What makes it worse is that I had to stay there for 5~6 hours.

Exercise 7.4: Redirecting Roadblocks & Insider description of your site

Describe:

As some of you from Northeastern know, I really like taking photos, especially the photos of people. However, there are unfortunately people who do not like to be on a picture and refuse to be taken by me. One of my friends, for example, does not like the pictures of his that I took even through those are not bad one. He is just smiling on the picture and it does not seem to embarrass him or something. I do understand some people would hate showing themselves to other people on photos, but that is pathetic to me. There is no shame to be on pictures. This would never be lame to show your smiles on pictures to other people like friends.

Understand:

Hating to be on photos is really understandable because those who dislike it may have no confident in themselves or just does not like getting attentions from others. Some people would possibly think they are embarrassed. He must be one of those kind of people.

Encourage:

He should have confident on himself and be more outgoing. If he thinks pictures would embarrass himself, I will tell him how great to be on photos. Photos are the thing that is able to cut and keep a moment you want to keep. It can save the moments you will never be able to go back.

Insider is that a person within a group or organization according to a dictionary. Since I came here London, I have seen some confusion between the people, the outsiders, which are us, and the insiders, which are people who actually live here so long. Very recently, for example, one of my American friend whom I am not going to name of said, “Why don’t they put the thing we bought in a bag? This is BS” when we were at waitrose, a grocery. This must be one of the difference between his American thoughts and insiders’ British thoughts. For him or Americans, that is a common thing. But it’s not here. From this experience, I believe the description of Insider is that a person within a group or organization and also who has something different from people from outside of their area.
